Sheffield is built on hills, and that changes the practical advice more than people expect. A wheel change on a gradient is a genuinely different proposition to one on the flat, and much of this city is on a slope.

Hills, and why you should not nurse it home

Driving on a flat tyre destroys the sidewall from the inside within a few hundred yards, which turns a repairable puncture into a definite replacement. On a Sheffield gradient you are also asking a damaged tyre to deal with more load transfer and less available grip.

If you are on a hill, stop somewhere level if you can reach it. If you cannot, put it in gear with the handbrake firmly on, chock a wheel if you have anything to use, and wait for us rather than jacking it yourself.

Coming over the tops towards the Peak District, phone signal can be patchy. If you are heading that way and already suspect a slow puncture, it is worth sorting before you set off.

  • Find your locking wheel nut key. Without it the wheel cannot come off. It is usually in the glovebox, the boot well, or with the spare.
  • Read your tyre size off the sidewall, for example 205/55 R16 91V, so we arrive with the right tyre rather than making a second trip.
  • If you are on a motorway or dual carriageway, get out on the passenger side and wait behind the barrier — not in the car.
