Leeds funnels an unusual amount of traffic through a very short stretch of motorway. The M621 runs right into the city centre, and where it meets the M1 and the inner ring road the junction numbering catches people out constantly.

• M621 — into and out of the centre. Junctions are close together, so tell us the number rather than a landmark.
• M1 north and south, and the M62 east to west.
• Leeds inner ring road (A58(M) and A64(M)) — partly in cuttings and tunnels, with no useful hard shoulder.
• A64 towards York and the A61 north.

The inner ring road

Sections of it run below street level and through covered stretches. If you stop there you are in a confined space with fast traffic and poor sightlines, so getting out and behind a barrier matters even more than it does on an open motorway.

If the car is still driveable at low speed, coming up and off onto a surface street is almost always the better call — we can work far more safely on a side street than in a cutting.
