Portsmouth is unusual: most of the city sits on Portsea Island, and there are only a handful of ways on and off it. That geography concentrates traffic tightly and makes a breakdown on the wrong road more disruptive than it would be elsewhere.

Getting off the island

If you feel a tyre going while you are heading onto the island, it is usually better to deal with it before you commit. The crossings are busy and the M275 in particular has limited places to stop safely.
