Newcastle's traffic is shaped by two north-south routes and a river. The A1 Western Bypass takes everything round the west side, the A19 takes it round the east, and the Tyne crossings connect the two halves.

If you are approaching the Tyne Tunnel

If you suspect a tyre is going and you are heading for the tunnel, come off before it. Once you are committed there is nowhere to stop, and a breakdown inside means the tunnel operator recovering you out before anything can be done.

The same logic applies to the Tyne Bridge and the other river crossings: deal with it on either bank, not in the middle.

Winter on the bypass

The A1 Western Bypass is exposed in places and carries a lot of traffic at speed. Cold weather also drops tyre pressures — roughly 1 to 2 PSI for every 10 degrees — so a tyre that was marginal in October can be genuinely under-inflated by December. Our guide on checking pressures covers it.
