Plymouth is a long way from a motorway. The A38 Devon Expressway does the job instead, and it is the road most of our roadside work here happens on.

Roads we get called to around Plymouth

• A38 Devon Expressway — dual carriageway east towards Exeter and west over the Tamar into Cornwall.
• Tamar Bridge and the Torpoint Ferry — the two crossings into Cornwall.
• A386 north towards Tavistock and Dartmoor.
• The city centre, the Barbican and the dockyard approaches.

The Expressway is not a motorway, and that matters

The A38 has grade-separated junctions and national speed limit sections, so it feels like a motorway — but the hard shoulder provision is not consistent along its length. Some stretches have a proper refuge and some have very little.

If you have to stop, get as far left as you can, and get everyone out of the car and up the bank. Do not attempt to change a wheel on the offside with traffic passing at 70mph.

Heading into Cornwall

If you are crossing the Tamar with a tyre you are unsure about, sort it on the Plymouth side. Once you are over, the roads get narrower and the distances between places to stop get longer.

Dartmoor roads to the north are another case for dealing with things early — phone signal is unreliable and there are long stretches with nowhere sensible to pull in.
