London is the hardest place in the country to deal with a flat tyre yourself, and the easiest place to justify a mobile fitter. There is often nowhere to pull over, nowhere to put a jack, and no realistic way to limp to a garage through traffic.

• North and South Circular (A406 and A205) — heavy, slow, and with very little hard shoulder.
• A40 Westway, A12, A13 and A2 — the main radial routes in and out.
• M25 where it rings the capital, plus the junctions feeding the M1, M4, M11 and M40.
• Residential streets with controlled parking, and underground or multi-storey car parks.

Parking is usually the real problem

Tell us honestly how the vehicle is parked. A car nose-to-tail in a residents bay on a narrow street may need to move a few feet before a wheel can safely come off, and it is far better to know that before we set off than when we arrive.

If it is in an underground car park, we need the height restriction at the entrance, because that determines what we can bring in.

One London-specific point: if your car is in the ULEZ or Congestion Charge zone, that affects nothing about the tyre — but it is worth telling us where exactly you are, because a postcode alone in central London can cover a lot of one-way system.
