Huddersfield sits in the Colne valley just south of the M62, at the point where that motorway climbs over the Pennines. It is the highest stretch of motorway in England and the weather up there is a category of its own.

This is the part worth taking seriously. The motorway reaches over 1,200 feet here, it is exposed on both sides, and conditions can be completely different at the top from the bottom. Wind, fog and ice all arrive earlier up there.

If you break down on the climb, get behind the barrier and stay there. It is not a place to sit in a car on the hard shoulder, and it is certainly not a place to change a wheel.
