Derby is served by trunk roads rather than motorways. The A38 runs north to south past the western edge of the city and the A52 crosses it east to west, and between them they carry most of the traffic we get called to.

• A38 — north towards Burton and the M1, south towards Birmingham. Grade-separated in places, ordinary junctions in others.
• A52 — east towards Nottingham, west towards Ashbourne.
• A50 — the link across towards Stoke and the M6.
• The inner ring road and the industrial sites on the city's edge.

Mixed junction types on the A38

This is the local quirk worth knowing. Parts of the A38 behave like a motorway with slip roads, and other parts have roundabouts and direct accesses. That means the amount of space you have to stop varies considerably along its length.

If you can reach a grade-separated section with a proper verge before stopping, do. If not, get as far left as possible, hazards on, and everyone out and behind a barrier.
