Van tyres vs car tyres: why you cannot just fit either

The short answer: van tyres are marked C for commercial and have a reinforced casing with a much higher load index. Fitting a car tyre of the same size to a working van means a lower load rating carrying more weight — which is how blowouts happen.

What the C means

You will see it written as 215/65 R16C. The C denotes commercial construction: more plies, stiffer sidewalls, and a casing designed to carry weight continuously rather than occasionally.

Some van tyres carry a dual load index such as 109/107, which gives the rating for single and twin-wheel fitment. If your van has twin rear wheels, the second figure is the one that applies.

Why load rating is the number that matters

A car spends most of its life carrying a driver and a passenger. A van spends its life carrying whatever it is for, and the load is rarely spread evenly — it sits over the rear axle.

A tyre run beyond its load rating flexes more than designed, heats up, and eventually fails at the point where the sidewall has been working hardest. That failure tends to happen at speed on a motorway with a full load, which is the worst possible combination.

Pressures are different too

Van pressures are substantially higher than car pressures, and the plate usually gives separate figures for laden and unladen. Running laden pressures empty gives a bouncy ride; running unladen pressures loaded is the dangerous direction.

Common mistakes

• Fitting car tyres to save money. The saving is small and the risk is not.
• Mixing C and non-C across an axle. Two different casings behave differently under braking.
• Ignoring the rear pair because the fronts wear faster on a front-wheel-drive van. The rears are usually the loaded ones.
• Forgetting the spare is often a car-spec wheel not rated for a loaded van.
